病院はできればお世話になりたくない場所の一つだけれど、その建築やデザインの美学は好きだ。

特に昭和の香りがする日本の病院は、デザイン美術館にでも来たような錯覚さえ覚える。手すりやドアノブ、エレベーター、館内放送用のスピーカーなど、高度成長期の最先端の優れたモノたちを目撃することができるから。この壁時計も例に漏れず、数字のデザインや秒針の尖り具合なんか、たまらなく素敵にデザインされている。

日本は、色々な理由で古いものが新しいものへと置き換えられることが多い。そのスピードも案外速く、1年、2年ぶりの帰国は、様変わりした街の顔を受け入れる作業から始まると言ってもいい。今度帰国できるのはいつのことか。プールに行く途中の小道にある、小さな和菓子屋さんに立ち寄れる日がくることを祈りつつ。

A hospital is one of the places where you don’t want to visit so often, but I like the aesthetics of its architecture and the design.

I especially like the one with the Showa Era’s atmosphere of the sophisticated design which I assume must be the best at the time (in this context, it is around the late 60’s and the mid 70’s). From a banister and a doorknob to an elevator and a speaker on the wall, you feel like as if you are in a design museum. Once I visited my mom in a hospital, and this clock caught my eye immediately. Its design of the clock face and hands, and the colour combination of the face are incredibly beautiful.

Sadly, old things are often replaced to new things in Japan for various reasons. The speed of change is relatively fast, so the first task of my stay in Japan, which happens once a year or every second years, is to adopt the changes in the city. How soon I will be able to fly home to see my family? I wonder myself, hoping to visit a small wagashi-ya, a Japanese confectionary store, on the way to a swimming pool.
